GAME 13 RECAP: STEVENSON 72, RICHARDS 41
HINSDALE, Ill. – Stevenson turned on the offense in the second half and powered its way past Richards 72-41 to reach the semifinals of the inaugural Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.
After a tightly contested opening half that saw the Patriots leading by just five at halftime, the Patriots exploded in the game’s final 16 minutes, outscoring Richards (7-5) 41-15 en route to the 31-point victory.
Leading 31-26 at the break, and by seven midway through the third quarter, the Patriots closed the quarter on a 14-2 run to take a 52-33 lead into the fourth quarter. Stevenson (8-2) continued to pull away in the fourth quarter, building a 30-point cushion midway through the quarter and coasting to the 72-41 win.
Stevenson shot 57.4 percent from the floor (31-of-54), including 50.0 percent (9-of-18) from downtown. Nine different players put points on the scoreboard for Stevenson, but Ryuji Aoki and Justin Smith led the charge. Aoki shot 8-of-9 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from downtown to finish with a team-leading 21 points. Smith totaled 18 points while shooting 8-of-14 from the floor. He added seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals in the victory. Willie Herenton added eight points and four assists in the victory. The Patriots also took advantage of 11 Richards’ turnovers, converting the mistakes into 21 points.
Jaylan Catledge did his best to keep Richards in the contest. Catledge scored 18 points in the first half and finished with a double-double of 29 points and 11 rebounds, both game highs. Chris Bender, Jaaron Coleman and Doug Brown totaled four points apiece in the loss. Richards finished the contest shooting 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the floor and struggled from downtown, missing all nine shots from beyond the arc.
Stevenson advanced to tomorrow’s semifinal at 7:00 p.m. The Patriots will await the winner of the Homewood-Flossmoor/Rockford Auburn contest. Richards will face the loser of the Homewood-Flossmoor/Rockford Auburn game in a consolation contest tomorrow at 3:45 p.m.
