HINSDALE, Ill. – Maine South held off a late rally from Lane Tech to score a 56-52 win in the opening round of the 2023 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

Maine South (8-5) led for the entire first half, building a 14-6 lead after the first quarter and carrying a 29-24 lead into halftime. Trailing by 11 in the third quarter, Lane Tech (8-6) closed with a flurry, using a 12-0 run punctuated by a buzzer-beating dunk from Dalton Scantlebury to put the Champions up 42-41 after three quarters.

Maine South moved back in front with 5:28 left to play in the contest and built up a five-point lead with 2:48 to play. Lane Tech closed to within a point with 20 seconds left but Maine South was able to seal the win from the free throw line.

Panayiotis Setos led the Hawks in the win, finishing with a game-high 26 points while shooting 9-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. Tyler Sierra added 12 points and seven rebounds. Matthew Yadger pulled down a team-best nine rebounds for Maine South. The Hawks finished the game shooting 45.2 percent (19-of-42) from the floor, including 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from three-point range.

Lane Tech had three players reach double figures in scoring. Shaheed Solebo led the Champions in the loss with 14 points. Scantlebury added 13 points and 11 rebounds to record a double-double. Parker Williams added 10 points for Lane Tech.

With the win, Maine South advanced to tomorrow’s final quarterfinal game at 8:30 p.m. and will await the winner of the Morton/Oswego East game. Lane Tech will face the loser of the Morton/Oswego East game in a consolation game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
