HINSDALE, Ill. – Schaumburg's quick start provided momentum that the Saxons rode all the way to a 49-35 victory over Morton in the consolation draw at day three of the 2023 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic on Friday.

The first half saw both teams struggle to hit shots, with Schaumburg shooting 27 percent and Morton shooting 21 percent on field goals. The big difference was rebounding, where the Saxons (10-6 record) held a gigantic 29-13 lead, including 15-4 on the offensive glass. The second-chance points helped Schaumburg pull away steadily throughout the opening two quarters.

The Saxons led 16-4 after the first quarter. Javonte McCoy was the catalyst with eight points in the period from his point guard position. In the second quarter, Tyler March got rolling. The center knocked down all three of his three-point attempts and racked up 11 points and nine rebounds by halftime.

Schaumburg held a 26-8 advantage going into the third quarter. But the Mustangs (3-9 record) started to make headway of their own with aggressive drives to the hoop to pull closer at 30-15. Another March trey got Schaumburg back on track at 33-18, and the Saxons increased the margin to 38-21 entering the fourth quarter. The lead never dipped below double digits in the fourth as Schaumburg cruised from there.

March's double-double effort featured 19 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. McCoy tallied 10 points and nine rebounds. Morton's Twon Jones led his squad with 13 points. The Saxons finished with a huge 49-29 advantage in the rebounding category (25-11 on the offensive boards).

Schaumburg's next opponent will be Plainfield East in tomorrow’s consolation game at 11:00 a.m. Morton faces off with St. Charles East in a 9:30 a.m. consolation game tomorrow.
