HINSDALE, Ill. – Zack Sharkey and Jonah Weathers combined to score 41 points to lead Marian Catholic to a 71-54 victory over St. Charles East in the opening game of the 2023 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

Marian Catholic (8-4) grabbed a 15-11 lead after one quarter and then outscored St. Charles East (3-10) 19-6 in the second to build a 34-17 lead at the half.

The Spartans pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 29 points early in the fourth quarter before closing out the contest with a 17-point victory.

Sharkey led the way for the Spartans with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 10-of-19 from the floor while adding three assists. Weathers totaled 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the victory, shooting 6-of-12 from the floor in the victory. Landon Mays came off the bench to score eight for the Spartans. Marian Catholic shot 47.5 percent (25-of-89) from the floor and led for over 28 minutes of game action. The Spartans scored 48 of their 71 points in the paint.

Gavin Szerlong and Matthew Steinberg paced St. Charles East in the loss, finishing with 14 points apiece. Steinberg added a team-leading eight rebounds for the Saints. St. Charles East shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the floor, including 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from downtown.

With the victory, Marian Catholic will await the winner of the Niles North/Morgan Park contest in tomorrow’s quarterfinal at 3:45 p.m. St. Charles East will face the loser of the Niles North/Morgan Park contest in tomorrow’s consolation round at 9:30 a.m.
