2018 GAME ONE RECAP: Willowbrook 66, Richards 61

HINSDALE, Ill. – Everett Stubblefield and Matas Masys combined to score 48 points to lead Willowbrook over Richards 66-61 in the opening game of the 2018 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.

The highly-competitive opening round game featured six ties and five lead changes with neither team leading by more than seven points.

Richards (7-3) led by as many as four points in the opening quarter only to see Willowbrook (7-3) pull even at 17-17 after one quarter. The Bulldos reestablished a four-point cushion early in the second, but Willowbrook closed the half on a 19-8 run to build a 38-31 lead at the half.

Richards pulled back in front in the third quarter, building a five-point lead with 1:52 left after a three-pointer from Paul Zilinskas. Willowbrook pulled to within two points after three quarters, trailing 53-51. Willowbrook started the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run, pulling in front at 60-55 with four minutes left. Richards made one last run, cutting the deficit down to one point after another Zilinskis three-pointer with 35 seconds. Willowbrook hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Willowbrook shot 43.1 percent (22-of-58) from the floor, including 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from downtown. Stubblefield led the Warriors and all scorers with a game-high 28 points, shooting 11-of-24 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from three-point distance. Masys added 20 points, hitting 8-of-15 shots and totaling seven rebounds and four assists. Scott Tumilty added seven points for the Warriors.

Richards shot 46.0 percent (23-of-50) from the floor in loss. Zilinskas paced the Bulldogs with 21 points, shooting 7-of-15 from the floor. Kajuan Wines and Trevon Jones added 10 points apiece for Richards.

Richards will face the loser of the Marian Catholic/Glenbrook North game tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in the consolation bracket. Willowbrook will await the winner of the Marian Catholic/Glenbrook North game in tomorrow’s quarterfinal at 3:45 p.m.
